CHP is working to provide opportunities for all residents to eat healthier. Eating healthy can help fend off serious diseases like diabetes and cancer, prevent heart problems; and help fortify the immune system. Yet this message is often overshadowed by the fast food, super-size commercials bombarding the air waves daily.
One of the initial CHP targets is the Eastside of Jamestown, which has been classified as a food desert by the USDA.
Food deserts, as defined by the USDA, are urban neighborhoods and rural towns without ready access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. Instead of supermarkets and grocery stores, these communities are often served only by fast-food restaurants and convenience stores that offer few healthy, affordable food options.
To help Eastside residents, the Creating Healthy Places program is building community gardens, promoting farmer’s markets and educating about eating healthy foods.
CHP worked with Jamestown Renaissance Corporation’s Grow Jamestown to create community garden policies and procedures and has developed a Giving Garden project with St. Susan Center.
Another initiative - Farm to School promotes the introduction of locally grown food into the food service program for Jamestown Public Schools.
Food Security Taskforce is a group of not-for-profit leaders, community members, and business owners who are exploring the feasibility of a grocery store, produce market, food buying club, food co-op or farmers market on Jamestown’s eastside to increase access to healthy food.
Future plans call for expansion of Healthy Foods Initiative to Dunkirk and throughout the county.
