LSS Hosts Living With Chronic Condition Seminars
Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Senior Life Matters, a program of Lutheran Social Services, will host a series of free educational sessions for people who are living with long-term conditions and their caregivers.

The sessions take place on June 11, 18 and 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Christ Chapel on the Lutheran Campus, 415 Falconer St.

"Living with a chronic illness can take its toll on the individual and his or her caregiver," said Janell Sluga, Senior Life Matters certified geriatric care manager. "We've had numerous requests to provide programs that offer tips on managing chronic illness and helpful ways to improve communication."

Handling Fatigue and Pain will be held Wednesday. Tracy Swyers-Merritt, Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation rehabilitation director, will speak on ways to conserve energy while enjoying a more active lifestyle.

"Following my presentation, we will have hands-on demonstrations with adaptive equipment and we'll talk about ways to manage pain and promote independence with mobility and the activities of daily living." she said.

On June 18, Kerry Mihalko will speak on the secrets to Being the Leader of Your Healthcare Team.

"When people take charge of their health and are proactive about managing chronic conditions, they have a better quality of life," she said. "We'll discuss how to get the most out of a doctor's visit and work hand in hand with your healthcare provider to get answers to important questions. We'll offer tips on connecting to the best level of care, which at times can prevent an unnecessary visit to the emergency room."

The third in the series is Communicating When You Just Don't Feel Well presented by Tory Irgang.

"This session is helpful to both the patients and their caregivers," she said. "Effective communication can make a big difference in relationships, especially when a person is dealing with a condition that is chronic." Learn how using "I" messages can be effective, especially in difficult situations. Learn ways to be a better listener and how to ask for help that leads to success.

A shuttle service will be available from the parking lots to the main entrance. Registration is appreciated by calling Senior Life Matters at 484-6161.
