Lake Shore Health Care Center

Our Missionur Mission

Lake Shore Health Care Center is committed to providing compassionate, high quality health care services to meet the needs of the communities it serves.

Our Historyur History

Although Lake Shore Hospital has been in existence only since 1963, and has the most modern overall campus in Chautauqua County, it can trace direct ancestry back to 1918 with the opening of the Rhinehart Hospital in Silver Creek. It also claims as ancestors the Silver Creek Hospital founded by Dr. Earl Carr in 1921, the Mosher Hospital located at 246 North Main Street in Angola (1930s), and Hanover General Hospital in Silver Creek established in 1950. Unfortunately, these small facilities were not able to keep up with either the increased demand for service, nor the strict State facility codes. In May of 1960 a group of 21 community members started fundraising for a facility to serve multiple communities and in 1963, Lake Shore Intercommunity Hospital opened its doors. The building of the facility was a true community effort; none of the funds used in construction were from government sources.

The original hospital configuration was 39 beds, 8 of them maternity beds. On the first day of operation January 4, 1965 the hospital admitted ten patients and has been serving the medical and surgical needs of the communities ever since. In the years since this busy beginning, the hospital has continued to grow and add services, as the community needs changed and expanded. In 1968, the medical/surgical beds were expanded and a nursing home was established which has since grown to 160 beds. In 1983 a full time emergency room was established and in 1984 the hospital developed a "nursing home without walls" serving patients in their own homes. The hospital added new surgical facilities, modern radiology, mammography, pharmacy, laboratory and CAT scan capability.

In 1994 an innovative childcare facility was developed to serve not only the very young but also the geriatric populations. Later in that same year, a 20 bed acute psychiatric center was opened.

In the year 2001 a merger with Tri-County Hospital in Gowanda will further expand the capabilities of the hospitals and expand the service area once again. The merger will also make both entities more cost-effective.

The Service area includes residents of a three county area of Southern Erie, Northern Chautauqua and Northern Cattaraugus Counties.
